Becky and Steve Lloyd are husband and wife potters making work in Clyde, NC. Becky has long been recognized for her extraordinary designs and detailed surface decoration in carved porcelain, while Steve’s work in wood fired stoneware has been admired for its strong forms. The two channel their mutual love of clay into works that are thrown by Steve, and showcase his eye for form, and then carved by Becky.

“With our sgraffito work, I can focus my attention on intricate patterns
and how to integrate them wholly into the pieces that they are being carved
on. My inspiration is derived from a variety of sources from Japanese wood
cuts to the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 1900’s. Steve and
I feel that by working together we will challenge each other in many different
ways. Steve has the opportunity to pursue his interest in form and by doing
so continually challenges me to create designs that will be complimentary
to each piece.”

The pieces that Becky and Steve create together are made from porcelain
clay. “We have found that english porcelain is perfect for creating
the elegant, clean, precise forms that we strive for". The interiors
of the vessel forms are finished with an amber celadon glaze that makes
them suitable for holding liquids. The exterior is covered with a thin coat
of a black “terra sigilatta” glaze before being carved by Becky
using a variety of tools including Xacto knive blades and fine tools to
achieve the extraordinary level of detail in the surface designs. The pieces
are then fired to to 2300 degrees fahrenheit.
